ePhyto Global Symposium Announcement

The International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) Secretariat would like to hereby announce that the 3rd IPPC Global Symposium on ePhyto is to be hosted by Malaysia on the 22-26th of January 2018 in Kuala Lumpur, supported by the Asia & Pacific Plant Protection Commission (APPPC). This event will be partially funded through the Australian contribution to the IPPC, as well as funds allocated by the APPPC. The Symposium theme will be “ePhyto & Trade Facilitation”, aligned with development and piloting of the Hub and Generic ePhyto National System (GeNS). The 2017 IPPC Regional Workshop for the Near East and North Africa Successfully Held in Tunisia

21-24 August 2017: Fifteen Near East and North Africa countries have been gathered in Tunis (Tunisia) from the 21st to the 24th of August 2017 at the invitation of the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) Secretariat and the Regional Office of the Food and Agriculture Organization for the Near East and North Africa Region (FAO-RNE). The annual regional workshop aims at strengthening phytosanitary capacities for effective enforcement of internationally harmonized standards for phytosanitary measures to prevent the introduction of plant pests to their countries, while facilitating the international trade of plant products.

Agenda for Expert Working Group on the Revision of ISPM 8 posted!

The agenda for the Expert Working Group (EWG) on the Revision of ISPM 8: Determination of pest status in an area (2009-005) is available at https://www.ippc.int/en/events/event/576/.

The meeting will be held in Hanoi, Viet Nam from 18 to 23 September 2017.

The EWG will work on the revision of ISPM 8 following the tasks outlined in the approved Specification 59. The outcomes of the meeting will be presented to the Standards Committee (SC) in May 2018.

Test the pest! - Two new IPPC Diagnostic Protocols adopted

The IPPC Secretariat is happy to announce that there are two new diagnostic protocols (DPs), which have been adopted by the Standards Committee (SC) on behalf of the Commission on Phytosanitary Measures (CPM) as the DP Notification Period just closed on the 15 August 2017. These two newly adopted DPs are:

• DP 23: Phytophthora ramorum (2004-013)

• DP 24: Tomato spotted wilt virus, Impatiens necrotic spot virus and Watermelon silver mottle virus (2004-019)

The guides were translated under the project MTF /AZE/007/STF Strengthening phytosanitary inspection and diagnostic services in Azerbaijan thanks to continuous support from FAO subregional office for Central Asia.

The IPPC National Reporting Obligations Workshop for the South-West Pacific was held in Nadi, Fiji on 10th and 11th August 2017. The Workshop was jointly organized by the IPPC Secretariat and the Pacific Community (SPC), and supported financially by the FAO-China South-South Cooperation Programme and the Australian AID. Dr. John Hedley launches the Biosecurity Information Facility Portal.

The Biosecurity Information Facility Portal (http://bif.lrd.spc.int/) was officially launched on 9 August 2017 by John Hedley, Principal Advisor, New Zealand. It was prepared by the Pacific Community (SPC) and it hosts the biosecurity operating procedures for the 22 island countries of the Pacific Plant Protection Organisation. It is an internet based hands-on tool designed for use by biosecurity border officers to carry out everyday duties relating to protecting the isolated fragile borders of the South West Pacific island nations.

Draft diagnostic protocols (DPs) under DP notification period

Two draft diagnostic protocols (DPs) are currently under the DP notification period:

  • Phytophthora ramorum (2004-013)
  • Tomato spotted wilt virus, Impatiens necrotic spot virus and Watermelon silver mottle virus (2004-019).

The DP notification period was opened on 1 July and will close on 15 August. Contracting parties have 45 days to review the draft DPs and submit an objection, if any, along with a technical justification and suggestions for improvement of the approved DP. If no objection is received, the DP is considered adopted by the SC on behalf of the CPM.
