27 May 2019, Xi’an, China – China’s “One Belt and One Road” initiative seeks to boost development and trade links between Asia, the Pacific, Europe, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean. Samoa workshop helps expand the use of ePhytos in the Pacific region

22 May 2019, Samoa - A workshop on using the Generic ePhyto National System (GeNS) was held in Samoa from 20 to 22 May 2019. The GeNS is a centralized web-based system that allows countries without their own electronic phytosanitary certificates (ePhyto) system to produce, send and receive ePhytos. Samoa is one of the three pilot countries testing the GeNS.

Updates from the May 2019 IPPC Standards Committee (SC) meeting

10 May 2019, Rome – The 33rd meeting of the IPPC Standards Committee (SC) took place from 6 to 10 May 2019 at FAO headquarters in Rome. The meeting opened with discussions on the phytosanitary term “detection survey” and the draft standard “Guidance on Pest Risk Management”. Discussions focused on including more guidance on selecting pest risk management options; and the criteria for deciding on appropriate phytosanitary measures.

New publication! Guidelines for managing Xylella fastidiosa

Up to 95 percent of olive production is concentrated in the Mediterranean region. Indeed, Spain, Italy, Greece and Tunisia alone account for 76 percent of productive olive trees. However, in recent years, millions of olive trees in the Mediterrranean area have been threatened by the deadly pest Xylella fastidiosa. For example, in 2013 a Xylella fastidiosa outbreak devastated many trees and greatly reduced olive production in Apulia, Italy.

G20 Ministers of Agriculture reaffirm importance of Plant Health in Niigata, Japan

Niigata, 11-12 May 2019. The G20 Agriculture Ministers’ Meeting taking place in Niigata, Japan last weekend reaffirmed the importance of plant health to reach Sustainable Development Goals and encouraged its members and stakeholders to take full advantage of the opportunity of the International Year of Plant Health (IYPH) in 2020.

Under the main theme “Toward Sustainable Agro-Food Sector – Emerging Issues and Good Practices”, ministers discussed a series of issues ranging from fostering innovative human resources and new technologies, Food Value Chain, and pursuing possible contribution to achieve SDGs.

IPPC and Bangladesh join forces to advance plant health cooperation

Rome, 30 April 2019. The IPPC Secretariat met at FAO headquarters with ten delegates from the Ministry of Agriculture of Bangladesh to discuss plant health priorities and areas of cooperation.

The Bangladeshi delegation, headed by the Ministry of Agriculture’s Additional Secretary Mr. Ashraf Uddin Ahmed, and Mr. Nurul Alam, Director General of the Department of Agricultural Extension, discussed its plant health priorities, including emerging pests, import and export compliance, sustainable and safe agriculture. 15 April 2019, Beijing – The General Administration of Customs , P.R. of China (GACC) carried out a publicity campaign “Protecting national biological safety, building a beautiful ecological homeland” at the 4th National Security Publicity Day. This has been the 4th consecutive year since 2016 when such a campaign was held.
