The Asian Workshop on Implementation of e-SPS Certification Systems Held in Thailand

The Asian Workshop on Implementation of e-SPS Certification Systems was hosted at the United Nation’s Economic and Social Commission for Asia and Pacific (UNESCAP)’s headquarters in Bangkok, Thailand from 1-3 November 2016. The Workshop was attended by Mr. Shane Sela (the IPPC Secretariat’s ePhyto Project Manager) and Ms. Kenza LeMentec (the Programme Officer of STDF), as well as the eleven countries from the Asian region and experts from the Convention on Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) Secretariat, United Nations Conference for Trade and Development (UNCTAD), and several authorities in electronic phytosanitary certification.

The 4th Training Workshop on the PCE Facilitators for the IPPC Contracting Parties successfully organized in Italy

Held in Ronciglione, Italy, from October 17th – 28th 2016, the 4th training workshop on the Phytosanitary Capacity Evaluation (PCE) facilitators brought together eight carefully selected phytosanitary experts from Francophone Africa and 2 lawyers. Workshop participants were trained to broaden and enhance their expertise in facilitating the application of the PCE tool. This two-week intensive training was conducted in an effort to improve existing or planned phytosanitary capacity systems with the financial support of the STDF.

The meeting on Technical Operation of the Generic ePhyto National System (GeNS) was held from 24-28 October 2016 at Pokuase, a suburb of Accra, Ghana. The meeting was facilitated by Mr Shane Sela, the IPPC ePhyo Project Manager, and supported with Mr Josiah Syanda, the member of the IPPC ePhyto Steering Group (ESG). The meeting was attended by Mr Ebenezer Aboagye, the Acting Director, and his project team from the Plant Protection and Regulatory Services Directorate (PPRSD) of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture of Ghana.

The Republic of South Sudan has an immense potential for sustainable agricultural development, with abundant rainfall, diverse soil and climatic conditions which provide multiple options to grow different crops. Although a very small area of the South Soudan territory is cultivated, more than half of the total area is prime agricultural land. Pest prevention and control is of paramount importance in the country. The 5th CPM Strategic Planning Group (SPG) Meeting was held from 4-6 October 2016 in Rome, Italy, with the theme “IPPC Contribution to Achieving UN SDGs for 2030 Agenda”. The meeting was chaired by Mr Francisco Javier Trujillo Arriaga, the Vice CMP Bureau Chair, and opened by Mr Jingyuan Xia, the IPPC Secretary. Over 30 participants attended the meeting, who came from more than 25 IPPC contracting parties as well as all team leaders of the IPPC Secretariat.

The CPM Bureau held a successful meeting spread over 4 and 7 October 2016 around the annual IPPC Strategic Planning Group (SPG) meeting, in Rome, Italy. The meeting was chaired by Ms Lois Ransom, the Bureau Chair from Australia, and opened by Mr Jingyuan Xia, the IPPC Secretary. The meeting was attended by all the Bureau members (except North America) as well all team leaders of the IPPC Secretariat. For the first time the Chairperson of the IPPC Standards Committee (SC) was invited to attend the meeting as an observer.

The IPPC Secretariat is pleased to announce that the number of countries commenting has almost doubled from 2011 (see graph above).This July, the IPPC Secretariat opened consultation periods through the new Online Comment System (OCS) for the highest number of standards ever processed by the IPPC Secretariat during a consultation period. The 5th CPM Strategic Planning Group (SPG) meeting was held in Rome from 4-6 October 2016, with the theme “IPPC Contribution to Achieving UN SDGs for 2030 Agenda”. The meeting was chaired by Mr Francisco Javier Trujillo Arriaga (Mexico), the Vice CMP Bureau Chair, and opened by Mr Jingyuan Xia, the IPPC Secretary. Over 30 participants attended the meeting, who came from more than over 25 IPPC contracting parties as well as all team leaders of the IPPC Secretariat. The IPPC Grain Standard Moving forward Slowly but Surely

An Expert Working Group met in Melbourne, Australia from 19-23 September 2016 to begin drafting an International Standard for Phytosanitary Measures (ISPM) on the International Movement of Grain (2008-007). The meeting was chaired by Mr Bill MAGEE (Australia) and Mr David HEINRICH (Australia) and attended by 15 participants. Experts from around the world gathered to discuss and decide what elements should be included in this standard; industry representatives were also invited and provided active input to the discussions. The CPM Financial Committee (FC) meeting was held on 3 October 2016 in Rome, Italy. The meeting was chaired by Ms Lois Ransom, the CPM Chair from Australia, and opened by Mr Jingyuan Xia, the IPPC Secretary.
