Blobby purple ‘Xylellu’ character to promote awareness about Xylella fastidiosa

The Maltese NPPO, Plant Protection Directorate (PPD), has been hands-on with its constant endeavors and initiatives to raise awareness in keeping away the devastating Xylella fastidiosa pest away from its shores.

Through the introduction of its ‘Xylellu’, a purplish menacing character specifically created as the mascot of a campaign co-funded by the European Union under the financial instrument of Regulation (EU) 652/2014, the NPPO has been conveying its message to the general public to refrain from bringing back home after travelling any plants which could easily be infected without any visible symptoms.

In Australia, Mediterranean fruit fly (Medfly) has a limited distribution in some parts of Western Australia. Its movement to the central and eastern states of Australia is inhibited by a hostile desert environment separating the west from the east. This forms a natural barrier which has supported the establishment of pest free areas for Medfly in central and Eastern Australia and the Ord River irrigation areas in northern Western Australia.

21-24 August 2017: Fifteen Near East and North Africa countries have been gathered in Tunis (Tunisia) from the 21st to the 24th of August 2017 at the invitation of the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) Secretariat and the Regional Office of the Food and Agriculture Organization for the Near East and North Africa Region (FAO-RNE). The annual regional workshop aims at strengthening phytosanitary capacities for effective enforcement of internationally harmonized standards for phytosanitary measures to prevent the introduction of plant pests to their countries, while facilitating the international trade of plant products.

Test the pest! - Two new IPPC Diagnostic Protocols adopted

The IPPC Secretariat is happy to announce that there are two new diagnostic protocols (DPs), which have been adopted by the Standards Committee (SC) on behalf of the Commission on Phytosanitary Measures (CPM) as the DP Notification Period just closed on the 15 August 2017. These two newly adopted DPs are:

• DP 23: Phytophthora ramorum (2004-013)

• DP 24: Tomato spotted wilt virus, Impatiens necrotic spot virus and Watermelon silver mottle virus (2004-019)
