The ISS-STDF Workshop on Implementation of the ISPM 15 held in Nairobi, Kenya

The ISS-STDF Workshop on Implementation of the ISPM 15 was held from 19-23 July 2017 at the headquarters of Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Service (KEPHIS), Nairobi, Kenya. The objective of the Workshop was to review the results of the study entitled “Implementation of the International Standard on Phytosanitary Measures 15 (Regulation of wood packaging material in international trade) : An empirical analysis of how the regulation affects the economy of a group of countries in Africa”. Orlando Sosa, Senior Implementation Officer and Chiluba Mwape, Phytosanitary Capacity Evaluation (PCE) Facilitator facilitated the second PCE workshop for Kenya and Somalia. The workshop was held in Nairobi Kenya, from 6-10 June, 2017. Chiluba Mwape was responsible for conducting Kenya’s follow-up to Kenya’s first PCE application. Orlando Sosa, with the support of the PCE Facilitator Chiluba Mwape, was responsible for training of the participants from Somaliland and Puntland on the methods of problem analysis, SWOT Analysis and the Logical Framework Approach.

The IPPC Secretariat Brainstorming on Teamwork and Team Spirit

Teamwork is the yearly theme for the IPPC Secretariat in 2017. To emphasize this, on 14 July 2017, a brainstorming session on teamwork and team spirit was organized during the 2017 Mid-year meeting of the IPPC Secretariat. The brainstorming session was chaired by Mr Jingyuan Xia, the IPPC Secretary, moderated by four keynote presenters, Ms Sarah Brunel, Ms Céline Germain, Ms Alejandra Jimenez Tabares, Mr Piotr Wlodarczyk, and attended by all IPPC Secretariat’s staff.

The 2017 Mid-Year meeting of the IPPC Secretariat was held on 14 July 2017 at the FAO Headquarters in Rome. The objectives of the meeting were presenting the achievements of the first semester and plans for the second semester of 2017, while also conducting a team work exercise.

International Year of Plant Health goes to New York

The 40th Session of the FAO Conference, the governing body of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, has approved on 5 July 2017 a resolution with the aim to declare the year 2020 as the International Year of Plant Health (IYPH 2020). The proposal for the IYPH 2020, which was initiated by Finland in 2015, received considerable support by numerous delegations.

Stamping out anti-biosecurity practices in the ACT

Potentially harmful exotic ants have been seized from a Canberra home, as part of an investigation into their attempted sale on Gumtree.

Head of Biosecurity Operations, Nico Padovan, said an estimated seven exotic ant species—including reproductive colonies—were seized as part of the investigation, with further identification required.

“While they may seem small and harmless, exotic ants can pose a huge risk to our environment and way of life, and represent a significant biosecurity risk to Australia,” Mr Padovan said.

A Successful Reception for Promotion of an International Year of Plant Health in 2020

On 4 July 2017, the Government of Finland and the IPPC Secretariat jointly organized a successful reception for promotion of an International Year of Plant Health (IYPH) in 2020 at the margins of the 40th Session of the FAO Conference in Rome. IPPC 2017 - Training course participants visit Apulian outbreak area of Xylella fastidiosa

Hosted by the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Bari (CIHEAM-IAM Bari) and facilitated by Ms. Sarah Brunel, IPPC Capacity Development Officer, the two- week training course was delivered from 29 May to 9 June, 2017. Participants included 15 Master students of the CIHEAM Integrated Pest Management Master. One NPPO representative also participated in the training.

The FAO-IPPC-CIHEAM combined efforts organizing an international workshop on Xylella fastidiosa and the Olive Quick Decline Syndrome (OQDS) have resulted in the publication of the proceedings of these events providing information on the state of Xylella fastidiosa infection in the European Union and the Mediterranean Region.

Stemming from a major outbreak in Italy of Xylella fastiodiosa associated with OQDS, NPPOs of North African, the Near East, and Euro-Mediterranean countries expressed their concerns and a need for further information and training in preventing the introduction and spread of this pathogen and its vectors. On 29 June 2017, the IPPC Delegate led by the IPPC Secretary Jingyuan Xia and including Craig Fedchock and Shane Sela, met with the World Bank (WB) team composed of Klaus Tilmes, Director of Trade & Competitiveness Global Practice, Jose Guilherme Reis, Practice Manager of Trade, and William Gain, Global Product Specialist for Trade Facilitation & Border Management.
