The 2016 winners of the IPPC photo contest “The Shocking Impacts of Pests”

The winner of the 2016 IPPC Photo Contest “The Shocking Impacts of Pests” is Tyler Fox, from the United States of America. The beautiful photo depicts slug-like sawfly larvae (Tenthredinidae: Caliroa pb. nyssae) feeding on black gum leaf (Nyssa sylvatica), a deciduous tree native to Eastern North-America. This sawfly is often gregarious and skeletonizes the bottoms of black gum leaves as it feeds, and defoliates trees. Many species of sawfly are major pests of forest plants, ornamental trees and shrubs.

CPM Bureau Meets for pre- and post-CPM Discussions

The Bureau of the Commission on Phytosanitary Measures (CPM) met from 29 through 31 March at FAO headquarters in Rome to prepare for the upcoming CPM-11 which took place from 4 – 8 April. During this meeting, the Bureau reviewed the CPM agenda topics and discussed how best to address any topics that may become contentious during the week. Strategic Planning: the IPPC towards 2020

The Eleventh Session of the Commission of Phytosanitary Measures (CPM 11) was successfully held from 4-8 April 2016, in FAO-HQ, Rome, Italy. The CPM 11 was the first meeting for the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) towards the next five years (2016-2020). At the opening section of CPM 11, Mr Jingyuan Xia, the IPPC Secretary, made a presentation on the IPPC towards 2020.

The Eleventh Session of the Commission of Phytosanitary Measures (CPM 11) was successfully held from 4-8 April 2016, in FAO-HQ, Rome, Italy. 4 April 2016, FAO, Rome - Invasive ants that devour crops, or the insidious "olive quick decline syndrome", which scorches leaves and withers branches, are just some of the multitude of plant-health threats that are spreading more easily in today's increasingly globalized world.

Achievements of the IPPC Secretariat’s Task Force for Resource Mobilization

The first task force established in 2015 for the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) Secretariat was the Task Force for Resource Mobilization (TFRM). Members of the task for are Leanne Stewart, Céline Germain, Orlando Sosa, Marko Benovic and Craig Fedchock.

As one of the TFRM’s first activities, current donors and possible donors were classified with consideration given to their potential, interests and past contributions. The Bilateral Meeting on Promoting the Cooperation between the IPPC and the World Customs Organization (WCO) was held 4 March 2016 at WCO-HQ in Brussels, Belgium. The IPPC delegate was composed of Mr Jingyuan Xia (the IPPC Secretary) and Mr Craig Fedchock (the IPPC Coordinator), and the WCO delegate consisted of Mr Kunio Mikuriya (the Secretary-General of WCO), Mr Alan Harrison (the Executive Officer of the Secretary-General Office) and Mr Theo Hesselink (the Technical Officer of Compliance and Facilitation). Finland officially requests FAO resolution for IYPH 2020

The Minister of Agriculture and Forestry of Finland Mr Kimmo Tiilikainen officially requested that the proposal to have the year 2020 declared as the “International Year of Plant Health” is placed on the agenda of relevant FAO bodies with a view to have the proposal endorsed to this effect at the 40th Session of the FAO Conference in 2017.

The STDF project 401 aims at training PCE facilitators. Sixty six (66) candidates from all over the world have been selected against stringent criteria to enroll in the first part of the project consisting in an intensive phytosanitary training. Achievements in Implementation Facilitation in 2015

The IPPC Implementation Facilitation Unit (IFU), as part of the IPPC Secretariat, participated in the IPPC Secretariat Annual Meeting that took place on 22 January 2016.

Mr. Orlando Sosa, IPPC Implementation Officer, presented the activities of the IFU over the past year. The most notable activities reported included, among others:
