Phytosanitary treatments on fruit fly can now move forward

The Technical Panel for Phytosanitary Treatments (TPPT)) just ended their annual meeting in Tokyo today (2 September 2016) where they reviewed scientific data from a recent study carried out by the Joint Food and Agriculture and International Atomic Energy Agency Division of Nuclear Techniques in Food and Agriculture. This study was carried out under the technical supervision of Mr Guy Hallman and was undertaken to understand if populations of fruit fly (Ceratitis capitata) from different geographical regions of the world responded differently to phytosanitary cold treatments. Enhancing Global Food Security through Strengthening Plant Health

The year of 2016 is a milestone for the IPPC to start the implementation of the IPPC annual theme towards 2020, which means all IPPC activities for each year, starting from this year, should be related to a specified IPPC theme. The IPPC theme for 2016 is “Plant Health and Food Security”. Recently, Mr Jingyuan Xia, the IPPC Secretary, delivered a video message for 2016 IPPC Regional Workshops, focusing on Enhancing Global Food Security through Strengthening of Plant Health.

The IPPC/APPPC Regional Workshop for Asia held in the Republic of Korea

The IPPC/APPPC Regional Workshop for Asia on the review of draft ISPMs was held from 25-29 July 2016, at Suwon-si, Gyeonggi-do, Republic of Korea. The workshop was organized by Regional Plant Protection Organization for Asia Pacific (APPPC) and the Government of Republic of Korea, with support of the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC). The workshop were attended by 36 experts from 18 Asia Pacific countries. The opening remarks was given by Dr Bong-Kyun Park, Commissioner of the Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency.

A floating threat: sea containers spread pests and diseases

FAO has recently published a news article on its homepage on the issue of sea containers, being dealt by the IPPC.

Invasive species arrive in new habitats through various channels, but shipping, is the main one.

And shipping today means sea containers: Globally, around 527 million sea container trips are made each year - China alone deals with over 133 million sea containers annually. It is not only their cargo, but the steel contraptions themselves, that can serve as vectors for the spread of exotic species capable of wreaking ecological and agricultural havoc.

Five more IPPC Diagnostic Protocols newly adopted!

The IPPC Secretariat is delighted to announce that on 15 August 2016 five more diagnostic protocols (DPs) were adopted by the Standards Committee (SC) on behalf of the Commission on Phytosanitary Measures (CPM):

  • DP 13 Erwinia amylovora (2004-009)
  • DP 14 Xanthomonas fragariae (2004-012)
  • DP 15 Citrus tristeza virus (2004-021)
  • DP 16 Genus Liriomyza Mik (2006-017)
  • DP 17 Aphelenchoides besseyi, A. ritzemabosi and A. fragariae (2006-025)

The International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) meeting on Technical Panel on Diagnostic Protocols (TPDP) took place on 11-15 July 2016 in Montego Bay, Jamaica. The meeting was hosted by the Ministry of Industry Commerce Agriculture and Fisheries and organized by the Plant Quarantine Produce Inspection Branch, Jamaica’s National Plant Protection Organization (NPPO). CPM Bureau Meeting Successfully held in Beijing, China

The CPM Bureau meeting was successfully run from 21-24 June in Beijing, China. This was the first Bureau meeting since the new membership was established during CPM-11 in April 2016, and it was also the first meeting of the CPM Bureau to be held outside of Rome. The meeting was chaired by Ms Lois Ransom, the Bureau Chair from Australia, and opened by Mr Jingyuan Xia, the IPPC Secretary, with presence of all the Bureau members.

CPM Finance Committee Meeting successfully held in Beijing, China

The CPM Finance Committee (FC) meeting was successfully held on 20 June in Beijing, China, This was the first FC meeting since the new membership was established during CPM-11 in April 2016, and it was also the first FC meeting to be run outside of Rome. The meeting was chaired by Ms Marie-Claude Forest (the FC Chair from Canada), and opened by Mr Jingyuan Xia (the IPPC Secretary), with presence of all the FC members.
