The IPPC Secretary, Mr Jingyuan Xia, held a meeting with H. E. Ms Maria Laura da Rocha, the Ambassador of the Brazilian Permanent Representation to FAO, on 14 January 2016 in FAO-HQ. The IPPC delegation was composed of the IPPC coordinator, Mr Craig Fedchock, the Information Exchange Officer, Mr David Nowell, and the Agricultural Officer in Standard Setting, Ms Adriana Moreira; and the Brazilian Ambassador was accompanied by Ms Larissa Maria Lima Costa (alternate FAO Representative of Brazil). The main objective of the meeting was to discuss the strengthening cooperation between the IPPC Secretariat and the BRICS country Brazil. The IPPC Secretary took the opportunity to outline the role, governance processes and mission of the IPPC, and also to highlight some challenges facing the IPPC and its Secretariat. He identified five potential areas for possible cooperation: a) Human resources cooperation; b) South-South cooperation; c) Technical cooperation; d) Information sharing; and e) Promotion of the possible International Year of Plant Health (IYPH) planned for 2020. The Brazilian delegation responded positively and agreed to further these discussions in the near future.
