Résumé

There is one specimen record of Phyllosticta fragariicola on strawberry in Queensland; collected by botanist F.M. Bailey from Brisbane in December 1892 (APPD, 2016). The specimen has recently been re-examined by R. Shivas and it has been determined that it was misidentified, and is actually Mycosphaerella fragariae (R. Shivas, personal communication 8 August 2016). Therefore, this record is considered invalid. Simmonds (1966) also notes P. fragariicola as present in Queensland, though provides the reference for this as a Colonial Report by Bailey (1893). There have been no further records of P. fragariicola in Queensland; therefore for Queensland, P. fragariicola has status of absent: pest records unreliable.

There is one record of Phyllosticta fragariicola on strawberry from Adelaide, South Australia in 1884 (USDA, 2016). Its BPI352277 record number suggests that it is located in the U.S. National Fungus Collection in Maryland, USA. Its singularity and old age render it unreliable in the absence of further evidence, especially given that the specimen from Queensland has been confirmed as a misidentification. Cook & Dube (1989) record P. fragariicola in a list of fungal pathogens present in South Australia. The record is not traceable to a specimen record and has neither a location nor date of collection. For this reason, the record is considered unreliable.

There are no further records of P. fragariicola since in South Australia; therefore for South Australia P. fragariicola has pest status of absent: pest records unreliable.

McAlpine (1895) lists Phyllosticta fragariicola as a fungal pathogen that is present in Australia, however this record is not traceable to occurrence references or even to a locality. The age of this record means it is based on the colonial literature, possibly the writings of Bailey discussed above and/or the single record from South Australia in 1884. This record is also considered unreliable.

There have been no records for P. fragariicola in New South Wales, Victoria, Northern Territory, Queensland, Australian Capital Territory or Tasmania.
