Banana plants showing symptoms for BBTV were detected by the farmer during routine surveys, in June 2015. The leaf samples tested positive for BBTV. The farm was placed under quarantine and an order to destroy infected plant material was given to the farmer. A follow up survey was done in February 2016 where it was found that the virus had spread further than the initial infection point, but still within the Hibberdene area. The vector, Pentalonia nigronervosa, has also been detected in the Ramsgate area of KwaZulu Natal. Surveillance actions for the vector have been initiated.
