Résumé

After several detections of B. dorsalis in the Sunday’s River Valley area of the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa and delimiting surveys, it has been decided that continuous eradication of the pest is no longer feasible within the affected area in spite of low number of overall detections. A cost benefit study has indicated that the pest population can be suppressed in the area and contained. The feasibility to develop and declare the area as an area of low pest prevalence will be investigated. The area will be managed as a quarantine area for this pest. The spread of the pest to other areas of the Eastern Cape, which are still pest free of OFF , will be regulated in terms of Regulation 110 of the Agricultural Pests Act 36 of 1983 which restricts the movement of affected host material from the quarantine area to free areas.

Danger
Potential spread or establishment of B. dorsalis into other production areas where its presence may impede the export potential of the relevant host commodities affected.
