Résumé

First UK findings of Verticillium longisporum on oilseed rape (Brassica napus)

The fungal pathogen Verticillium longisporum has been confirmed in the UK for the first time this summer. Samples of cv. Castille from Kent and cv. Barrel from Herefordshire were obtained by ADAS. Testing at the Central Science Laboratory confirmed that these plants were infected with V. longisporum. It appears that this pathogen is already established in the UK because it has been confirmed at two sites and there is evidence to suggest it is present at other sites around the country.

It is known to have been present in other Northern European countries on oilseed rape for many years and given that oilseed rape seed can be traded freely within the EU it would not be practicable to attempt to control all the entry pathways for this pathogen.
