This information paper provides a brief review of the Historical Background of the IPPC.
It describes the Kind of Organization the IPPC is, and gives an update on the number of Contracting Parties including which- and how many countries have accepted the New Revised Text (Adherence / acceptance of amendments). A coloured list shows an overview of all member countries and their membership in Regional Plant Protection Organizations and the IPPC. A last section summarizes background information on The Exchange of Official Phytosanitary Information.
Note: As of September 2nd 2005, there were 139 contracting parties, among which 93 (67%) had accepted the New Revised Text. It was noted that the New Revised Text would enter into force after acceptance by two-thirds of the contracting parties to the IPPC; which has happened that day! Hence, the new revised text (1997) will come into force on the thirtieth day after it is accepted by two-thirds of the contracting parties to the IPPC, which is 2nd October 2005.
