Plant Health Management Essential to Mitigate for Climate Change

The 3rd IPPC Seminar on Plant Health and Climate Change was held in FAO-HQ on 27 January. The Seminar was chaired by Mr Jingyuan Xia, the Secretary to the IPPC Secretariat, with over 80 participates present including those from Missions or Embassies of China, France and South Africa. There were also some participates from Argentina, Canada, Egypt, Ivory Coast, USA, etc. through virtual meeting. Theme of 2016 Annual Meeting for the IPPC Secretariat: Team and Cultural Building

The 2016 Annual meeting of the IPPC Secretariat was held on 22 January at the HQ-FAO in Rome, Italy. The main objectives of the meeting were to review the major achievements of the IPPC Secretariat for 2015, to plan the core activities for 2016, and to strengthen internal management. The meeting was chaired by Mr. Jingyuan Xia, the Secretary to the IPPC, with participation of all Secretariat staff. Team Leaders, Brent Larson, David Nowell and Orlando Sosa, made briefings for the respected teams, and Craig Fedchock, the IPPC Coordinator, delivered a report for the IPPC Secretariat. A New Look for ISPMs for the New Year!

As a welcome to 2016, the IPPC Secretariat has published its International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures (ISPMs) in English, French and Spanish with a brand new, modern and appealing layout: [https://www.ippc.int/en/core-activities/standards-setting/ispms/].

Although they are available in English, French and Spanish only at present, other language versions will follow as resources become available. Not only do these versions have a new look, but the French and Spanish versions also include ink amendments previously approved by CPM in English. Strengthening IPPC-Brazilian cooperation

The IPPC Secretary, Mr Jingyuan Xia, held a meeting with H. E. Ms Maria Laura da Rocha, the Ambassador of the Brazilian Permanent Representation to FAO, on 14 January 2016 in FAO-HQ. The IPPC delegation was composed of the IPPC coordinator, Mr Craig Fedchock, the Information Exchange Officer, Mr David Nowell, and the Agricultural Officer in Standard Setting, Ms Adriana Moreira; and the Brazilian Ambassador was accompanied by Ms Larissa Maria Lima Costa (alternate FAO Representative of Brazil). Ireland supports the IYPH with EUR 25 000

The Government of Ireland has entered into an Agreement with FAO and has donated EUR 25 000 in order to support the efforts to declare an International Year of Plant Health in 2020 (IYPH 2020). The donation by Ireland is the first direct financial contribution to promote the proclamation of the IYPH 2020. The IPPC Secretariat is very grateful for this donation from Ireland since it will allow it to undertake IYPH 2020 related activities which had no previous financial foundation.
