Achievements of the IPPC Secretariat’s Task Force for Resource Mobilization

The first task force established in 2015 for the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) Secretariat was the Task Force for Resource Mobilization (TFRM). Members of the task for are Leanne Stewart, Céline Germain, Orlando Sosa, Marko Benovic and Craig Fedchock.

As one of the TFRM’s first activities, current donors and possible donors were classified with consideration given to their potential, interests and past contributions. From this step, letters were sent out to all current and possible donors for further consideration, and an action plan was established for resource mobilization efforts. Ash tree set for extinction in Europe

The ash tree is likely to be wiped out in Europe, according to the largest-ever survey of the species. The trees are being killed off by the fungal disease ash-dieback along with an invasive beetle called the emerald ash borer. Devastating disease affecting Hawaiian forest trees

Metrosideros polymorpha is the dominant tree, and foundation, of native Hawaiian forests. Sadly, over the past 2-3 years, a new fungal disease (a Ceratocystis species) has spread rapidly across the Island of Hawai'i, where it has killed trees over much of their range. The Task Force for Communication and Advocacy (TFCA) was established in September 2015 to strengthen the communication and advocacy of the IPPC Secretariat, both internally and externally, to achieve the cohesion, harmonization, integration and coordination in this area. TFCA’s main objective is to improve IPPC’s visibility by showcasing the work and achievement of the IPPC Secretariat by coordinating the communication, advocacy, and information management across the IPPC Secretariat. WTO Members look at way forward in agriculture talks

WTO members considered the way forward in agriculture talks at the first informal meeting of agriculture negotiations after the WTO Nairobi Ministerial Conference on 8 March.

Promoting the Cooperation between the IPPC and the WCO

The Bilateral Meeting on Promoting the Cooperation between the IPPC and the World Customs Organization (WCO) was held 4 March 2016 at WCO-HQ in Brussels, Belgium. The IPPC delegate was composed of Mr Jingyuan Xia (the IPPC Secretary) and Mr Craig Fedchock (the IPPC Coordinator), and the WCO delegate consisted of Mr Kunio Mikuriya (the Secretary-General of WCO), Mr Alan Harrison (the Executive Officer of the Secretary-General Office) and Mr Theo Hesselink (the Technical Officer of Compliance and Facilitation). Finland officially requests FAO resolution for IYPH 2020

The Minister of Agriculture and Forestry of Finland Mr Kimmo Tiilikainen officially requested that the proposal to have the year 2020 declared as the “International Year of Plant Health” is placed on the agenda of relevant FAO bodies with a view to have the proposal endorsed to this effect at the 40th Session of the FAO Conference in 2017.

The project “Strengthening phytosanitary inspection and diagnostic services in Azerbaijan (MTF/AZE/007/STF)” was officially launched with the inception activities on 9 -12 April 2016, Baku, Azerbaijan. The project aims to improve inspection and diagnostic services by the State Phytosanitary Control Service (SPCS) and by the State Customs Committee (SCC) of Azerbaijan maintaining the necessary level of phytosanitary protection of agricultural production and ecosystems in the country.
