The meeting on Technical Operation of the Generic ePhyto National System (GeNS) was held from 24-28 October 2016 at Pokuase, a suburb of Accra, Ghana. The meeting was facilitated by Mr Shane Sela, the IPPC ePhyo Project Manager, and supported with Mr Josiah Syanda, the member of the IPPC ePhyto Steering Group (ESG). The meeting was attended by Mr Ebenezer Aboagye, the Acting Director, and his project team from the Plant Protection and Regulatory Services Directorate (PPRSD) of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture of Ghana.

Australia: TR4-infested farm settlement to proceed

The settlement of the Queensland farm that tested positive for Panama Disease Tropical race 4 (TR4) will now proceed, following the confirmation that a suspect plant from a nearby property does not contain the disease. The planned buyout of the TR4 farm, owned by the Robson family, was temporarily suspended late last month after the suspect plant was reported to Biosecurity Queensland (BQ).

Alien fungus blights Hawaii's native trees

An ecological disaster is unfolding on Hawaii's largest island. Rapid 'Ôhi'a Death, caused by an imported fungus, is causing Hawaii's iconic native 'ôhi'a tree to perish in droves. Some 20,000 hectares are now affected, according to a recent survey. Abundant across the archipelago, 'ôhi'a are the only native tree in Hawaii that colonizes lava flows, and they provide habitat for several rare species of native birds and insects. Emerald Ash Borer May Become a Problem for Olive Growers

Professor Don Cipollini has found that the invasive green beetle can feed and successfully develop into adulthood on stems of the Manzanilla olive tree, a Spanish variety that yields green table olives and is grown widely around the world.

The Republic of South Sudan has an immense potential for sustainable agricultural development, with abundant rainfall, diverse soil and climatic conditions which provide multiple options to grow different crops. Although a very small area of the South Soudan territory is cultivated, more than half of the total area is prime agricultural land. Pest prevention and control is of paramount importance in the country. New IPPC Procedure Manual for standard setting posted!

The 2016-2017 version of the IPPC Procedure manual for standard setting has been posted today and is available at https://www.ippc.int/en/core-activities/ippc-standard-setting-procedure-manual/

This new version includes numerous significant changes in accordance with the CPM-11 (2016) adoption of the adjustments to the IPPC Standard setting procedure. It also includes updates in accordance with decisions made by the Standards Committee and technical panels.

The 5th CPM Strategic Planning Group (SPG) Meeting was held from 4-6 October 2016 in Rome, Italy, with the theme “IPPC Contribution to Achieving UN SDGs for 2030 Agenda”. The meeting was chaired by Mr Francisco Javier Trujillo Arriaga, the Vice CMP Bureau Chair, and opened by Mr Jingyuan Xia, the IPPC Secretary. Over 30 participants attended the meeting, who came from more than 25 IPPC contracting parties as well as all team leaders of the IPPC Secretariat.

The CPM Bureau held a successful meeting spread over 4 and 7 October 2016 around the annual IPPC Strategic Planning Group (SPG) meeting, in Rome, Italy. The meeting was chaired by Ms Lois Ransom, the Bureau Chair from Australia, and opened by Mr Jingyuan Xia, the IPPC Secretary. The meeting was attended by all the Bureau members (except North America) as well all team leaders of the IPPC Secretariat. For the first time the Chairperson of the IPPC Standards Committee (SC) was invited to attend the meeting as an observer.

The IPPC continues to strengthen stakeholders’ engagement in setting International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures

The IPPC Secretariat is pleased to announce that the number of countries commenting has almost doubled from 2011 (see graph above).This July, the IPPC Secretariat opened consultation periods through the new Online Comment System (OCS) for the highest number of standards ever processed by the IPPC Secretariat during a consultation period. The 5th CPM Strategic Planning Group (SPG) meeting was held in Rome from 4-6 October 2016, with the theme “IPPC Contribution to Achieving UN SDGs for 2030 Agenda”. The meeting was chaired by Mr Francisco Javier Trujillo Arriaga (Mexico), the Vice CMP Bureau Chair, and opened by Mr Jingyuan Xia, the IPPC Secretary. Over 30 participants attended the meeting, who came from more than over 25 IPPC contracting parties as well as all team leaders of the IPPC Secretariat. Launch of the new IRSS Helpdesk

The IRSS Helpdesk, located in the International Phytosanitary Portal (IPP), has been active since 2011 to support contracting parties’ implementation of the IPPC and its ISPMs. The Helpdesk is an online platform that includes three main features:

  • Question and Answer Forum - open to all plant health professionals seeking support on issues relating to implementation;
  • Frequently Asked Questions - provides a set of questions and answers to assist contracting parties with general and specific enquiries about implementation;
  • Phytosanitary Resources website - links to the catalogue of technical resources that assist contracting parties in implementation.
