Cargo pest awareness in Australia

Vessels, shipping containers and break-bulk cargo can introduce exotic pests and diseases into new areas with harmful consequences on plant health, food security and the environment. The Australian Government Department of Agriculture and Water Resources has developed a video and a guide to assist relevant stakeholders with the identification and management of pests that may be present in imported goods and containers at approved arrangement sites.

The Phytosanitary Measures Research Group (PMRG) will meet from 24 to 27 September 2019 in Cairns, Australia. Registration for the meeting is open and, experts in phytosanitary treatments and other measures are welcome to become a member and attend the upcoming meeting.

The PMRG was created to be an independent group that could consider issues related to phytosanitary treatments. It is a forum where critical phytosanitary treatment issues can be addressed through discussion and collaborative research and where global phytosanitary treatments issues can be scientific analysed and reviewed. Call for experts: Workshop for drafting a CPM Recommendation on “contaminating pests”

The Australian Department of Agriculture is calling for NPPOs to nominate representatives to attend an IPPC International Workshop on the Spread of Contaminant Pests. This workshop will bring together representatives from IPPC and relevant industry organisations involved in international trade and shipping.

The workshop was postponed to February or March 2020. Updated information will be made available in due course.

The workshop aims to discuss and highlight the increased spread of contaminant pests, and foster collaboration between industry and government stakeholders on cost effective commercial solutions.
