Contaminating pests associated with traded goods: Call for interested experts to be part of the virtual group to assist with the CPM Recommendation

The CPM-14 agreed to include in its work programme the topic for a CPM Recommendation on “Facilitating safe trade by reducing the incidence of contaminating pests associated with traded goods”.

This topic was proposed by Australia with support from New Zealand as contained in the CPM paper CPM 2019/37.

Experts interested in joining this virtual group to improve the draft text, please send an email to Mr Ian Thompson (Ian.Thompson@agriculture.gov.au) and copy the Secretariat (Adriana.Moreira@fao.org) by 20 May 2019.

Invasive Alien Species: Invitation to the Online Discussion Forum

The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity organized a moderated online discussion forum on matters related to invasive alien species, with the following timetable:

  • 1 - 31 May 2019: Methods for cost-benefit analysis
  • 1 - 30 June 2019: Methods, tools, and measures for identification and minimization of risk of e-commerce
  • 1 - 31 July 2019: Methods, tools and strategy for invasive alien species management under climate change and others
  • 1 - 31 August 2019: Risk analysis on the potential consequences on social, economic and cultural values
  • 1 - 15 September 2019: Wrap up session for synthesis of report

The IPPC Plant Pest Surveillance Guide now in Spanish!

Surveillance is at the core of phytosanitary activities. The IPPC Secretariat published in 2016 a guide for NPPOs to understand the principal requirements of surveillance programmes.

This guide was kindly translated in Spanish by the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA). The IPPC Secretariat thanks IICA for the translation and Communidad Andina (CAN) for the review and hopes this resource will make an impact to strengthen phytosanitary systems in Spanish speaking countries.

Call for human-interest stories on plant health for IYPH 2020

At the CPM-14 session held last week, FAO and the IPPC Secretariat launched a call for human-interest stories on plant health. The call is intended to promote real stories about how plant health affects the lives of a variety of people across sectors.

Your story will be used to inspire people to take action.

The IPPC Guidelines on Sea Container Surveys for NPPOs are now available in all FAO languages!

The IPPC Guidelines on Sea Container Surveys provide guidance to national plant protection organizations (NPPOs) on how to inspect and record contamination details in a consistent and harmonized manner when undertaking the sea container cleanliness surveys. The Guidelines have been developed by the Sea Container Task Force (SCTF) - a sub-group of the IPPC Implementation and Capacity Development Committee (IC).

The Guidelines and accompanying excel sheets for recording and reporting information, as well as building a database useful for analysis are available in all FAO languages at: https://www.ippc.int/en/core-activities/capacity-development/guides-and-training-materials/

Please be aware that some IPP user invited to CPM-14 has received fake phishing attempts by email that seems sent by IPPC.

In this fake email they are asking flight details, WhatsApp, Telegram and viber number.

International Plant Protection Congress 2019: 2nd circular out

The XIX International Plant Protection Congress will be held in Hyderabad, India, from 10 to 14 November 2019. Organized by the International Association for Plant Protection Sciences (IAPPS), ICRISAT and the Crop Protection Societies in India, the 2019 Congress programme of events aims to address emerging key issues in crop and plant protection. International Year of Plant Health (IYPH 2020) will be one of the topic of the Congress.

The organizers announced that the registration is now open with Early Bird registration ending May 31, 2019.

Call for discussion papers for the Expert working group (EWG) on Audit in the phytosanitary context (2015-014)

The International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) Secretariat is soliciting discussion papers in preparation for the meeting of the Expert Working Group (EWG) on Audit in the phytosanitary context (2015-014) which will take place from 3 to 7 June 2019 in Canada: https://www.ippc.int/en/events/event/725/.

The EWG will develop a draft standard according to Specification 66 on Audit in the phytosanitary context (https://www.ippc.int/en/publications/85297/).

The latest version of the Annotated Glossary is now published!

The explanatory document for ISPM 5 (Glossary of phytosanitary terms), the “Annotated Glossary”, provides detailed notes on terms and definitions in the Glossary.

It is reviewed by the Technical Panel of the Glossary and published every three years.

This latest version takes account of decisions until SC November 2018 and supersedes the last published version of 2016.

The International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) Annual Report 2018 is now available online! The annual report aims to highlight the IPPC’s major achievements in 2018 in an easy to read new format.
The report also explains why these achievements are important for the global plant health community. Highlights include the adoption of 10 new standards, progress made in electronic phytosanitary certification (ePhyto) and other projects. Call for Expert Working Group (EWG) for Focused revision of ISPM 12 (Phytosanitary certificates) in relation to re-export

The International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) Secretariat is soliciting nominations for appropriately qualified experts to take part in the Expert Working Group (EWG) for Focused revision of ISPM 12 (Phytosanitary certificates) in relation to re-export (2015-011), which is tentatively scheduled for 9-13 December 2019 in Rome, Italy.

Nominations are due 15 May 2019.

Expertise required (according to Specification 67):

  • Two or three experts with a combined knowledge of and experience in regulating and implementing phytosanitary certification related to re-export; and
  • One or two current or former members of the TPG with particular understanding of terminology related to the phytosanitary certification ...
