UN General Assembly Second Committee approves IYPH resolution

New York, 8 November 2018. The Second Committee of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has just adopted the resolution on the International Year of Plant Health (IYPH) in 2020 by consensus. The process for the IYPH 2020 proclamation will be concluded when the UNGA plenary reviews the resolution in late December 2018.

The IPPC community is grateful to Finland for their leadership in the process to proclaim 2020 the International Year of Plant Health. For more information on the IYPH, see our video, factsheet and web page.

The International Conference on “Fall Armyworm Research-for-Development – Status and Priorities for Africa” was held at the African Union Commission (AUC) campus in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (29-31 October). Three intense days of meetings and discussions brought together over 220 experts from international leading scientific institutions and organizations worldwide.

The development and the implementation of harmonized protocols, able to include multi-location assessment of relationship between crop damage due to FAW and yield losses, have been highlighted as one of the priorities for the scientific community. The Report of the Task Force on Topics October 2018 meeting is now posted!

The Task Force on Topics meeting was held at FAO Headquarters, Rome, Italy from 1-3 October 2018.

The Task Force reviewed submissions to the 2018 Call for Topics: Standards and Implementation and prepared recommendations to the Standards Committee and Implementation and Capacity Development Committee.

The 14th International Conference on Plant Pathogenic Bacteria (ICPPB)

The 14th International Conference on Plant Pathogenic Bacteria (ICPPB) will be held in Assisi (Umbria, Italy) from 7-12 June 2020. Entitled “The Impact of Plant Pathogenic Bacteria on Global Plant Health”, the conference aims at promoting and disseminating the latest scientific advances in Phytobacteriology; and encouraging collaboration among researchers.

A special session of the 14th ICPPB will be dedicated to the International Year of Plant Health (IYPH 2020) to highlight the important role of scientific research for promoting plant health and combating the devastating effect of bacteria and diseases on plant health and the environment.

Deadline extended: Call for experts for TPPT and EWG on Audits in the Phytosanitary Context

The International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) Secretariat is soliciting nominations for appropriately qualified experts to take part in

  • the Expert Working Group on Audits in the phytosanitary context (2015-014)

  • the Technical Panel on Phytosanitary Treatments (TPPT)

Nominations are due 12 November 2018.

Another great achievement: The reorganized suite of fruit fly standards are now available in English on the IPP!

ISPMs 26, 30, 35 and 37 have successfully been reorganized to reflect the decisions of CPM-13 (2018). This reorganization made the suite of fruit fly standards more logical and simple, which will help in their implementation and facilitate safe trade.

The IPPC Secretariat would like to acknowledge the combined hard work of the IPPC Technical Panel on Fruit Flies, the Standards Committee and several countries from different FAO regions who made this reorganization possible.

Language versions will be available in early 2019.
