21 June 2019, Rome – An important element of the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC)’s work is to safeguard agriculture and facilitate safe trade. As part of this effort, the new IPPC Strategic Framework 2002-2030 includes developing commodity and pathway specific standards. Much progress on this topic was made during the second meeting of the IPPC focus group on commodity standards with its newly revised terms of reference (ToRs).

14 June 2019, Rome – The Commission on Phytosanitary Measures (CPM) Bureau met in Rome from 10 to 14 June 2019 to focus on how to implement the IPPC Strategic Framework for 2020-2030.
The IPPC Secretary Mr. Jingyuan Xia highlighted that when planning activities it was important to link the IPPC Strategic Framework for 2020-2030 and the five-year investment plan. He also stressed the need to mobilize resources for both the International Year of Plant Health (IYPH) and the IPPC ePhyto solution work programmes.

Rome, 14 June 2019. The first meeting of the International Steering Committee (ISC) on the International Year of Plant Health (IYPH) in 2020 was held at FAO Headquarters in Rome. The meeting was opened by Dr. Jingyaun Xia, Secretary of the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC), and Dr. Dongxin Feng, senior officer from FAO Partnership Division. Fifteen representatives of FAO regions, international organizations, the private sector and IYPH Secretariat attended the meeting. During CPM-14 (2019) the North American Plant Protection Organization (NAPPO) delivered a presentation on the importance of using Risk-Based Sampling (RBS) in order for phytosanitary inspections and the measures that are put in place based on inspection results are technically justified.
After the presentation, some contracting parties (CPs) emphasized that sharing views and experiences with CPs would contribute to a better understanding of the conceptual foundation and the operational and regulatory considerations when implementing RBS.
